Q: What is the first symptom you get when you’ve been “glutened” (aka you accidentally ingested gluten)?
A: I get a sharp, stabbing stomach pain within 5-10 minutes of eating. This usually happens if I’m out at a restaurant and somehow ingested gluten or ate something that was cross-contaminated. HOWEVER, I had a really big moment of stupid
today. I’m in the midst of a spring decluttering, and I had my eye on our super old toaster that has been occupying some counter space forever. My boyfriend has been completely gluten-free for about a year, and we keep forgetting to get rid of the toaster. Well, today I decided that I needed that toaster out of my life and out of the apartment, so I grabbed it with no regard for all its gluten Jedi powers, and then I proceeded to immediately spill breadcrumbs all over my right hand. I washed my hands with soap and water and figured I would be fine. Within 30 minutes my hand had broken out into an itchy case of DH (dermatitis herpetiformis). Lesson learned! Bottom line: Sharp, stabbing pain is the first symptom when I ingest gluten. An itchy rash is the first symptom when I touch something. What about you? Share your response in the comments below!
